UBASUTE

Ubasute is a narrative and contemplative game that uses the controls of a golf game. The story, which unfolds as the levels progress, is that of a young man taking one last journey with his dying mother.

Presentation and context

The goal of this project was to create a golf game in a group of five people. I was in charge of the level design.

Our Game Design Lead and Game Art Lead wanted to add poetry and narrative, so we opted for this original mix to challenge ourselves.

Research

Our gameplay was very simple, so we added a flower bouncing system to make traversing the levels more complex.

The idea here was to link narrative and gameplay, so the levels had to tell something beyond the dialogue that plays out while traversing them.

Tests and iterations

I tested the levels extensively and had them tested. The game had to be enjoyable as a golf game. Then, another Game Designer added the dialogue to add emotion, along with the visuals that matched that.

So we iterated extensively to ensure everything coexisted properly.

This project helped me work in game genres I wasn't familiar with, and to blend different genres for an original result. It also helped me improve my teamwork with other professions.
